Meet Michele Sherman, or better known as her stage name Siya. She was Cali born, but raised in the streets of Brooklyn, New York. She is best known for her role in the Sisterhood of Hip Hop that is a reality TV show that airs on Oxygen. She is also making her acting debut in the movie Deuces, which also stars Larenz Tate, Megan Good and Lance Gross to name a few. It is due to be released on August 16, 2017.

At a very young age while staying in New York, Siya had to serve time in a woman’s facility. It was during this time that she honed in on her talent. Once she completed her time, she made her move to Atlanta and started performing at various venues, such as Compound, CW Loft, and Masquerade. During this time, she started creating so much buzz for herself, she grabbed the attention of many major labels. There was just one small problem: she was openly gay, and the world wasn’t ready for that. unnamed-15.jpg
Tank, however, decided to take a chance on her and signed her in 2012. Their debut track, “D.Y.K.E.” was born. Airing on October 15, 2012, currently has 397,562 views. Here’s the video

Siya has released a total of three albums: The Proof (2014), Infiniment… (2015), and SIYAvsSIYA (2016).

Siya is the arguably the original one that came into the scene was unapologetically her. She was and still is the pioneer for other openly lesbian rappers to come onto the scene and into the public eye. She, (arguably) paved the way for Young M.A, and proved that you don’t have to be a heterosexual or bisexual female to create buzz and/or be successful in this industry. It just requires patience.
